Yay Massachusetts!

Once again proving that we're the only state with any damn common sense, the Massachusetts legislature turned Mitt Romn-evil's veto of a bill that allows the Plan B emergency contraceptive to be sold over the counter. The bill also requires emergency rooms to offer Plan B to rape victims. Hallelujah! See the Boston Globe article here.

The Senate voted unanimously 37-0 to override the veto. In the House, the vote was 139-16 to override.

The governor made a lot of excuses for not signing the bill for the morning after pill, but politics was a big part -- conservatives wouldn't touch him with a ten foot pole in a 2008 presidential run if he legalized Plan B for over-the-counter purchase. Also, he's now saying that it could abort a fertilized egg, so he can't sign the bill or whatever. But while I guess that it's possible, it's unlikely.

The medication, which is different from the abortion pill RU-486, is a hormone in pill form which, when taken after unprotected sex, prevents ovulation, stops the egg from being fertilized by sperm, or stops a fertilized egg from attaching itself to the uterus wall.

Some people (aka idiots) argue that the medication's over-the-counter access will promote promiscuity, but dude, you all went to high school, all of you out there. Did ANYTHING prevent promiscuity of teenagers? Besides, if we're not going to lecture teens about condomns during sex ed, we'd better fucking do *something*.

That reminds me, one of my friends and I were talking about buying an old ice cream truck and driving around the city with a bullhorn and telling kids about how they can protect themselves. We'd be the Sex-Edmobile, and we'd throw condoms out like candy at a parade! Awesome. Obviously that's not going to happen in real life, but oh, if! Kick Freaking Ass.

Anyway, just wanted to give Massachusetts a shout out. Go legislature! Screw you, Romney!
